How VAT works in Oman

Oman introduced VAT on 16 April 2021 at 5% under Royal Decree 121/2020. Most goods and services are taxed at 5%; basic food items, education, healthcare, financial services, residential property leases, and exports outside the GCC are zero-rated or exempt.

Worked example

A Muscat consultant invoices a client OMR 1,000.000 (excl. VAT). The 5% VAT line is OMR 50.000, so the invoice total is OMR 1,050.000.

Quick formulas

Add 5% VAT: net × 1.05 = inclusive. Extract: inclusive ÷ 1.05 = net; VAT = inclusive − net.
